We list the most successful sites on Facebook last month, with a detailed breakdown of the interactions that the top 25 publishers received in June.
First off, we’ve just published a blogpost outlining the methodology behind these rankings. This is aimed at answering any questions about where the data comes from, and what it means. The important thing to remember is this tracks interaction with content published in the month of June only – so articles from May or April do not count, even if they are still getting shares.
Now, spot the newcomer in the top ten publishers of June, ranked by shares:
The Huffington Post shined last month, breaking the 40m total interaction mark for the first time.
There is a quick explanation – we added errant Huffington Post feeds to our database in June, completing their coverage. This brings their June output to over 26,000 articles – a staggering amount of monthly content. They also scored some of the biggest Facebook hits of last month, with four of the top 10 biggest stories.
As predicted last month, BuzzFeed’s interactions started to grow again in June, with growth for the first time in a few months to just over 30m.
Fox News continued to power up the charts, with almost 19.5m total interactions. Fox have really consolidated their position at number three, and it remains to be seen what competitor networks will be able to chase them down in the coming months.
After months of steady gains, millennial-focussed Elite Daily finally broke into the top ten most-shared chart. They’ve had huge social success with videos in particular in the last month, helping them join the top Facebook group.
A new addition to the top ten most-shared is PlayBuzz, an Israel-based viral site that has been gaining traffic quickly since its launch last December. PlayBuzz have scored possibly the fastest ascension to the upper reaches of the Facebook rankings, with a phenomenally low content output – less than 100 stories last month. While we saw some decline in the popularity of interactive quizzes for sites last month, PlayBuzz’s audience seems not to mind – a ‘Which 80s Heavy Metal Band Should You Be In?‘ quiz racked up over 924,000 interactions in June alone.
As PlayBuzz rise, another low-output megastar goes missing. For the first time in months, Viral Nova have dropped right out of the top 25. Consistently amongst the top publishers so far this year, their Facebook total has dropped from over 15m in January to 2.7m last month. Viral content can be a tough gig.
Down the chart, there were significant gains for the Bleacher Report, USA Today, The Blaze and Time. All these sites added significant volumes of interactions to their totals, pointing to the overall rise in fresh content engagement on Facebook, as illustrated in our new infographic.
It was also a good month for the British Mirror, who entered at number 25 globally. The Mirror have been ramping up their digital focus over the last year, so this rise shows that their strategy is bearing some fruit.

This data relates only to content published from June 1 2014 – June 30 2014. We compiled our data using Spike, which tracks the content that people are sharing and engaging with in real time. It’s used by some of the world’s leading digital newsrooms, and there’s a free trial for new users.
NB: Due to a Facebook score glitch, we are unable to provide figures for ABC and telegraph.co.uk this month. This problem should be rectified for July’s rankings.
